Ambassador Spotlight ... Meet Tanya Towne

Tell us about yourself.

I am a mother to a wonderful 24 year-old young man who is my pride and joy. I love the outdoors and spend most of my time outside. My favorite thing to do in the summer is go kayaking. I get to cool off in some amazing rivers while enjoying the peacefulness of nature. When it is not a hundred degrees outside, I love to camp out. I am a primitive camper which makes it possible for me to camp in some remote places with beautiful views. I have even camped by myself but I wasn’t in the middle of nowhere, it was a state park. I have been to 28 of the 47 state parks in SC, which I think they just added some new parks so I might need to change that number. I also love to travel. This year my mother and I went to Ireland which was an amazing adventure. I share my love of animals and nature with everyone I meet! I currently live in Fountain Inn but will be relocating to Laurens in the next year hopefully.

Where do you work and what is your title? What do you like about your job?

I am the director and teacher at the Joe R. Adair Outdoor Education Center. I love almost everything about my job. There are so many perks to my job! I have several animals which I enjoy playing with and teaching about. I love learning about the different animals that I have or that are surrendered to the center. I love taking students on nature walks and showing all of the cool things you can find outside. I love teaching and my job allows me to continue teaching but not have to deal with the headaches that can also come with teaching.

What motivated you to become an ambassador for our organization?

I wanted to become an ambassador to learn more about the community that I serve in. I didn’t grow up in Laurens but I work here. My son went through Laurens Schools and that is one of the reasons I came to teach in Laurens. I wanted to be a part of the community that was teaching him and his friends.

·What makes Laurens County special to you?

I think I partly answered that in the above comment. My son attended Laurens schools and I began my teaching career in Laurens. That makes it special to me as well as where I work. My son came to the center on a field trip but I never imagined that I would one day be working here! I love the small town community vibe here and that is another reason why I wanted to belong to this community.

If you could have any fictional character as your best friend, who would it be and why?

That is difficult! I read a lot of murder mysteries and I can’t think of one of them as my best friend lol. I would choose Erza Scarlet from one of my favorite Anime series; Fairy Tale. She is a no-nonsense woman who doesn’t take any junk from people. She is cool headed and a powerful warrior. Her costumes are really cool and she kicks butt. Also, she knows how to party in a responsible way!
